Celebrate Mother’s Day with City Line Florists

mother's day

As Mother’s Day gets closer, and we think about the best way to recognize Mom on this special day – it is interesting to realize that throughout history and regardless of culture, we have evidence of rituals and celebrations to honor the women who act as the matriarchs of our societies. Even in the creation story, the first woman’s name – Eve – references this most important vocation; the name means ‘mother of all living.’

Other Traditions

Although many countries around the world observe Mothers’ Day in the same way Americans do, some have their traditions.

In Ireland, the regional Catholic holiday, “Mothering Sunday” is the forerunner to modern-day Mother’s Day. On the last Sunday of Lent, people were asked to go back and visit their home parish or “mother church.” At some point that is now lost in history, parishioners began also to bring their mothers a small token of appreciation on Mothering Sunday. The modern observance of Mothers ‘ Day still takes place on that Sunday.

Another country that celebrates the day but on a different date is Thailand. The queen’s birthday is considered Mothers’ Day, currently August 12th.

Symbolic Floral Meanings

Flowers have a symbolic language all their own. While many do not realize the inherent meaning of a specific flower, their popularity on a certain day often reflects that meaning.

Pink roses signify appreciation, and therefore effectively act as the unofficial emblem of Mother’s Day.

Pink calla lilies carry the same meaning.

The regal purple iris denotes wisdom and courage, and exotic orchids stand for beauty and grace.

Flowers are a customary offering on Mothers’ Day; but this year, when you choose the floral arrangement for the women you cherish, make it extra thoughtful. Design it with her personality in mind.
