In honor of Mother’s Day, City Line Florist asked one of our resident moms to share her experience as both a parent and a flower expert. And yes, she tells us what every mom wants for Mother’s Day.

How did you get into floral work?
Throughout high school, I was in a voag program at Ledyard High School. I took a 3-week course in floral design and fell in love with it. Then I went to Boston to Rittner School of Floral Design and took a 6-month course in 1981. The rest is history.
What do you love most about working with flowers? The variety & beauty they have to make so many designs and combos of flowers. I also love how comforting they can be during sadness and happiness. They give to those who receive them as well as to those who offer them.
Favorite flower? No favorite flower. I love them all
If you design, do you have a signature style? Are you known for any specific approach or preference? My signature style would definitely have to be European hand-tied bouquets. As far as a specific approach, I make sure colors complement each other. I like to work with an odd number of flowers, 3 or 5 if the price allows. I prefer pinks and pastels versus a bright mix and love small items such as wristlets, boutonnieres, flower crowns, and bridal bouquets. I love love love doing wedding work.
What do you love most about being a mom? Having children is a gift and seeing them grow up to be good people is a joy. Giving them love and having them give love in return is a wonderful feeling as a mother. An even better feeling is becoming a grandmother, which I am with my grandson Steven. I am truly blessed.
What do your kids think about what you do? Are they into flowers? My son Gregory doesn’t know too much about what I do; he is a boy, after all. On the other hand, my daughter Jessica LOVES what I do. She is creative like me as a hairstylist and loves to give flowers to her friends.
What flowers or flower design do moms really want for Mother’s Day, from your point of view? Speaking as both a mom and a flower expert? If you could pick one design from your selection to receive yourself, which would it be? In my opinion, a mom on Mother’s Day would be overjoyed with receiving any flowers. Mothers love what their families give them on Mother’s Day. The greatest gift is what comes from the heart as families choose those special flowers to give their mom or loved one. My personal choice would be hydrangea, roses and phalaenopsis orchids in a compact cylinder with soft pastel tones and soft accenting flowers that could be displayed on the center of a table. My favorite arrangement from our Mother’s Day collection is Pastel Beauty.
